Grandparents’ Day
PUPILS got to hear what life was like in the pre-digital era when a number of schools celebrated Grandparents Day recently.
The day was marked in Gael Scoil Dun Dealgan for the first time this year, when third class pupils invited their grandparents or other older family members to a celebration in the school hall.
The pupils got the chance to interview grannies and grand dads about life when they were growing up and heard how children amused themselves in the days before smart phones, tablets and computers, learning about card games such as ‘Fives’. The children were delighted to receive party bags from the grandparents, who were treated to tea and cake.
Grandparents’ Day was also celebrated in St Joseph’s NS when hundreds of happy, smiling grandparents arrived for the Grandparents As- sembly and class visits. The school wanted to show their appreciation for all the wonderful ways grandparents help students and for the joy they bring to everyone’s lives. There was great excitement among the students, who were very eager to show off their lovely school to their extended family members. Everyone gathered in a packed Halla for some per- formances by the choir and Ms Kennedy’s class. A number of students also read some very touching poems about grandparents and a few tears of joy and pride were shed! Then the Sixth Class ambassadors led each group to the classrooms, where there was more fun and excitement. One granddad even performed some magic tricks for Mr. Campbell’s class!
