Nging for Sullivan

-

think I played almost every league game bar one. That was a fantastic year but I’ve progressed as a player since then because I’ve gone back into midfield.

‘I learnt a lot though throughout that year. Every year I’ve learnt a lot and I’ve just constantly taken things on board and tried to progress as a player and a person.

‘Dundalk though changed my life. That sounds corny but it’s the truth. I met some fantastic people who still to this day influence me on a daily basis and for that I’m very thankful,’ he said.

While Bray are many people’s tips for the drop, Sullivan has loftier ambitions. The club were pushing for Europe midway through half season only for their form to tail off as financial uncertainty surrounded the club.

The midfielder, nicknamed ‘The Truck’, said that was nothing but an excuse though.

‘We started the year well last year, as did many other clubs but the financial uncertainty or whatever other words were thrown around? The fact is that lads were paid. Everyone was paid. We just had a dip in form like any other team.

‘The truth is we just used that as an excuse. We just had a dip in form but I felt we came back to ourselves towards the end and when we played up in Oriel, I thought Dundalk were very lucky to get three points with a last minute goal.

‘People just use things as excuses. I’ve never had a bad experience with Bray and if I did I wouldn’t go back. It’s a very good club, run by very good people and this year it’s going to be better than ever.

‘Personally I’ve got the same aim as anyone in the Dundalk dressing room or any other dressing room for that matter which is to play to my best, enjoy the season and get as much as I can from it whether that be learning or trophies. We’ve got to reach high regardless of what others may think of us or what badge we have on our tops.

‘I’m very excited for Friday because it’s the first game of the season and I’d imagine it will be packed out. That’s all the better because it’s a bigger stage to play on. Players will rise to that.

‘Dundalk and Bray matches are fantastic games that have largely been neck and neck. To be the best you’ve got to beat the best and Dundalk are up there with the best.’
