Quay face anxious wait as referee abandons tie

-

PREMIER KINGSCOURT 1 QUAY CELTIC 2

THIS match ended in bedlam and bizarrely was abandoned in the 94th minute with Quay leading on Friday night.

Three players, the Quay duo of Martin Smith and Gary Shevlin, and a home player were sent-off with the visitors on the verge of an important victory and trying to run down the clock as they took a short corner. A throw-in followed and chaos resulted as a nasty incident ensued involving Quay’s Eanna McArdle and player manager Martin Smith, who went to his teammate’s aid.

The affair now will have to be dealt with by the League Committee, with Quay reportedly having despatched a let- ter of complaint the next day.

The game was only ten minutes on when Quay lost the injured Conail McArdle, having to be replaced by Danny Coyle.

They shrugged off the setback to control the first-half, and took the lead when Martin Smith pounced after the home goalkeeper spilled a shot by Vinny Smith ten minutes from the break.

The visitors struggled in the second period and paid the price for sloppy defensive play when Kingscourt equalised ten minutes from the end.

However, within a couple of minutes Drew Duffy regained the lead for Quay with a smashing volley form 25 yards.

QUAY: John Rogers, Sean Hand, David Redmond, Dean Sheil, Gary Shevlin, Stephen Hutchinson, Conal McArdle (Danny Coyle 10), Eanna McArdle, Andrew Duffy, Vinny Smith, Martin Smith.
