- Fionola Greene 1962-2018

FIONOLA Greene, Greenwood Drive, Red Barns Road, who died recently, was a lady who loved travel, and had a great affinity with her native Quay area of Dundalk.

She passed away peacefully on 16 January, 2018, at home, surrounded by her devoted family.

Aged just 55, she was only daughter of the late Tom and Mary Callan, Point Road, Dundalk. She had two brothers, Declan and Ronan.

Fionola attended primary school in Realt Na Mara, before going on to St Vincent’s secondary school.

She continued her education in Dundalk Regional Technical College, completing a course in secretarial studies.

For twenty-five years Fionola worked for Daly Bros., Dundalk, becoming a valued member of staff over that long career.

She worked for a time in RVG auctioneers and estate agents, before she took up employment with SWAP, Simon Women’s Aid Project.

It was a job Fionola really enjoyed, and she loved working with her colleagues, Lisa, Grace,

Paul, Aidan and Sarah.

She was very happy during her time there.

Travel was near the top of her many interests, and she looked forward to holidays abroad, with Italy, in particular, a favourite destination.

Fionola also loved being in her garden, and listening to music.

However, she was often happiest when close to her home place on the

Navvy Bank.

Fionola was an avid walker along that route, and anyone who encountered her, knew straight away that she loved her dog.

She enjoyed meeting people when out and about, and stopping to have the craic.

Fionola is sadly missed by her loving husband, Miceál, who she married in September, 1995; brothers, Declan and Ronan; mother-in-law, Anne; sisters-in-law, Siobhán, Carmel, Anne Marie, Mary, Majella, Helen and Patricia; brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, family relatives, wonderful neighbours and friends.

In addition to her parents, Tom and Mary, she was also pre-deceased by her father-in-law, Michael Greene.

After reposing at her home, Greenwood Drive, Fionola’s remains were removed to St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church, where the funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Brendan Callanan.

Also present was the Army Chaplain. Fionola’s husband, Miceál is a serving member of the Defence Forces, attached to Aiken Barracks in Dundalk.

Readings were given by her sisters-in-law, Anne Marie and Patricia; while the prayers of the faithful were led by Declan Callan, Sarah Callan, Mark Rogers, Laura Callan, David Collins and Fionola’s three good friends, Anne Jones, Hilda Kirk and Anne Doonan.

Gifts symbolising her life, a travel brochure, a book and picture of her dog, were brought up to the altar by Conor Callan and Dean Hoey.

Siobhán Collins and Helen Callan participated in the offertory procession.

Fionola’s brother, Ronan, gave a very fine and fitting eulogy. Music was provided by Sarah McCourt. The songs included Fionola’s favourite, ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ from Les Miserables.

Burial took place afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Dowdallshill.

The Month’s Mind Mass takes place on Sunday, 18 February, 2018, in St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church at 12.30pm.
