- Marie Warnock 1930-2018

THE death occurred on 17 January, 2018, of Marie Warnock, who was known for her soft and good humoured friendly nature, with a ready beaming smile.

Born and reared in Legion Avenue, Dundalk, she was highly regarded and respected in Blackrock, home for practically all of her married life.

Marie and her husband Eddie celebrated 60 years together with their diamond anniversary last September.

Eddie, an area overseer with Louth County Council until he retired, hails from Main Street, Blackrock. The couple spent most of their married life there, where they brought up a daughter Marion, before moving the short distance to The Ferns over ten years ago.

They briefly resided in Francis Street, Dundalk after their marriage, but all the rest of the time lived in Blackrock, first at The Crescent.

Marie led a simple, normal, life, but the arrival of her grandson, Seán brought a new and fulfilling dimension to it. She got great enjoyment from minding him, and loved bringing him out for walks.

But it was interjected with great sorrow, following the tragic death as a result of a motorcycle accident of Sean’s father, Garda John Naughton, in July 2006.

Marie was the only daughter of Charlie and Margaret Rust, who also had five sons. Gerard is the only survivor, with Charles, Joe, Peter and Christy having passed away.

She went to Castletown Girls School, and started work at an early age when she finished her formal education. She was employed in the former Pinny factory in Mary Street North before going to work in Halliday’s shoe factory.

In her younger days, Marie appeared on stage in a number of pantomime productions in the town hall by the legendary Flo Kieran.

She retained a love for musical theatre, and over the years attended shows put on by local groups, including the Dundalk Musical Society.

She and Eddie were accomplished dancers, and had prizes to prove it from their olde tyme waltzing days in the Market House, at the town’s square.

Marie was big fan of Dickie Rock and Nana Mouskouri, her two favourite singers. Music remained a big source of enjoyment to her until the end.

She enjoyed the music and bingo sessions in Carlingford Nursing Home, where she was a patient for over a year prior to her death, and received wonderful care and attention.

She had enjoyed playing telly bingo in her home, and having the odd flutter on the horses.

Marie is greatly missed by her husband, Eddie; daughter, Marion; grandson, Seán; brother, Gerard. She is also survived by her nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

After reposing at McGeough’s Funeral Home, Jocelyn Street, on the Thursday, Marie was taken the next morning to Saint Fursey’s Church, Haggardstown for Requiem Mass, celebrated by Fr Pádraig Keenan PP, who gave the eulogy.

The beautiful music was provided by Patsy Breen and Eamon Cooney.

Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.

The Month’s Mind Mass for Marie will take place on Saturday, 17 February, 2018, at 9am in Saint Fursey’s Church.
