Congratulations to singer Dawn

March 1998

-

DUNDALK urban council passes a vote of congratulations to Dawn Martin on being chosen to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The local singer wins the National Song Contest, and is now set for the big one in Birmingham on 9 May next.

‘ To be honest, we never really thought we would win,’ admits Dawn at home in Toberona.

She performs ‘Is Always Over Now’ with her backing singers, sisters Karen Carroll and Elaine Matthews.

The voting goes down to the final jury, before Dawn is declared the winner, beating the highly-acclaimed Vard Sisters by three points.

A perpetual trophy and £1,000 prize goes to songwriter, Gerry Morgan.

Dawn was discovered back in June 1996 after being asked to get up and sing at a cousin’s wedding.

She goes on to win a couple of talent contests, and then joins the O.G. cabaret show.

Further success follows, and the link up with Gerry Morgan comes when Dawn features on a BBC Ulster Radio.
