Meabh becomes judge for Junk Kouture final

- By MARGARET RODDY

HAGGARDSTOWN student and former Junk Kouture finalist Meabh O’Hanrahan got the opportunity to experience the competition from a different perspective when she was selected as a student judge for the western regional final recently.

A past pupil of the St. Vincent’s Secondary School, Meabh won the eastern regional final in 2013 with her design ‘Unlocked’ - a 1920s flapper-style dress made entirely out of keys and wire.

Meabh was delighted that one of the other judges, fellow Louth woman Tracy Fahey from Limerick School of Art and Design, remembered the outfit from five years ago.

The 21 year old who is currently studying Business Studies in DCU, was thrilled to have been asked to join the judging panel in the Helix Dublin for the western regional final.

‘ This competition was one of the best memories I have from school,’ she recalls. ‘We were one of the first groups from St Vincent’s to qualify for the national final and we had a great time.’

‘I modelled the dress on the Late, Late Show and we got to go to the Electric Picnic. I would certainly encourage students to take part in the competition as it’s so much fun.’

While Meabh still has a keen interest in fashion, she says she decided to do business studies rather than fashion as she wanted to keep her options open.

‘I would like to go into the fashion industry, perhaps doing something like branding,’ she says.

She thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being on the judging panel for the western regional final.

‘ The standard of entries was really high which made it difficult to pick the winners but it was great fun as well.’

‘We went round and looked at the entries during the day so that we could see the work involved and spoke with all the groups,’ she says. ‘ The final itself was fantastic with so many amazing outfits.’

Meabh has been asked to help the winners of the western regional final backstage when they take part in the national final in the 3 Arena next month.
