Super Saints duo storm to national glory
ATHLONE was again the venue for the third and final day of the All-Ireland Indoor Championships and for the second week in a row St Gerard’s Dundalk duo Enya Silkena and Grainne Moran made the trip in search of National glory.
First into action was Enya in the U12 girls long jump. After her recent victory at the Leinster championships she came into the contest in good form.
With another strong series of jumps she leapt out to a best of 4.29m to record an excellent victory and improve her PB.
With little or no time to celebrate her victory it was straight over to her second event of the day in shot putt. Despite the exertion of the long jump competition Enya gave another great display to finish in a fine fourth place just outside the medals.
Grainne took to the track for a very tough heat in the U12 girls 600m knowing that only the first three places were guaranteed a final place. In a super fast race she had to run almost up to her PB to snatch third place and qualify. In the final another strong pace was set and Grainne went with the leaders from the start.
After two laps the strong pace started to tell with the leading pair getting away from her and the rest
of the field closing in.
Despite this setback she gathered her composure and kept on strongly to the finish to put more distance between her and the chasing pack to take an excellent bronze medal in a new PB of 1.49.91 with the winners time
beating the championship record by a full second.
The girls have performed brilliantly in their first indoor season and will be able to bring the confidence gained into the forthcoming track season over the next few months.
