Rock Celtic open new stand at Club

March 2003

-

ROCK Celtic officially open a new spectator stand and floodlights.

And, at the Blackrock club’s AGM, members hear of a need to further improve facilities with an all-weather pitch.

New chairman Pat Carr says, that with a growing population, provision of extra playing space can’t come soon enough.

Meanwhile, the floodlights allow games to be spread out over the week to alleviate wear and tear on the field.

Minister Dermot Ahern, a former Rock Celtic player, does the honours, and an ecumenical blessing takes place.

A double-header fixture follows between Rock Celtic and Iveagh Boys, Belfast at schoolboy level, and then a junior match featuring guest players from local clubs in the Meath & District League against a combination of Rock’s first team and reserves.

At the AGM, outgoing secretary John McGeady echoes the view that an all-weather surface is the next logical development.

An extra pitch is needed to relieve congestion on the existing playing field.

The financial statement reflects a progressive approach and success, notes outgoing treasurer Pat Carr.

The good run of the U-12s in the National Cup entails long journeys to Kerry and Cork, while the senior team and reserves also do well in their respective provincial competitions.

This means the cost of transport rises to over €6,000.

Closer to home, the seniors and reserves win cup competitions in the MDL.

The treasurer reveals €500 per-week is needed to run the club.

Brian Ward is recognised as an honorary member of Rock Celtic for his tireless work since day one, on and off the field.
