Fedigan a ‘ray’ of light for Cuchulainn

-

AS the first day of spring finally dawned on March 25th, so too did the IVCA 2018 racing season.

The veteran’s scene has always been a fertile hunting ground for Cuchulainn CC cyclists with a number of it’s riders claiming national age graded titles over the years.

The first round of the season was a 100km road race in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare. Three separate races were hosted on the day, with the ‘Greens’ race being one of the most hotly contested.

Evergreen Sean Lally, a stalwart of Irish Cycling took to the start line and while age may not be on his side his race nous and ability to position himself is unparalleled.

The long race was a fast affair and saw a number of breaks go up the road. However the large bunch were keeping all breakaways on a short lease.

As the kilometers ticked by the peleton was withered down as the weaker riders dropped off. Eventually a select bunch came to the line fighting tooth and nail for the win.

Castelebellingham man Ray Fedigan was well positioned and followed the wheels, until finally picking the perfect moment to open up his sprint. His acceleration took him to the front of the bunch, a position he held to take the chequered flag to take the win for Cuchulainn. Club mates Dale Copas and Jimmy Flynn also rode good races finishing in the same bunch as Ray.

Also in action for Cuchulainn was David Holland who sprinted to a third place finish in the ‘Black’ race, in what proved to be a great day for the club.

Meanwhile on the open racing front, Liam Dolan travelled to Ards last Saturday week for the 142km Tour of Ards and came home in eighth position.

Liam is competing in the three-day, four=stage Tour of the North this weekend, as part of the Clan Eireann Lurgan Team.
