overseas buyers.

The evening had begun with two well-backed winners. Firstly, Andy Slattery’s Offline (6/1 overnight but returned as the 15/8f), despite being slowly away, comfortably landed the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden, a race that has been won in recent years by a number of subsequent Group and Listed race winners.

Andy commented: ‘Declan (McDonogh, winning jockey) liked him from day one. He did that well and we’ll look for a ‘winner of one’ race now but we’ll take our time with him’.

Secondly, the Sheila Lavery-trained Danz Gift (6/1 overnight into 11/4jf) was a confidently-ridden and emphatic winner of the Connolly Kelly Accountants Handicap, coming from last-to-first to score under Ronan Whelan.

The bookmakers didn’t fare much better when Ger Lyons’ Masucci (3/1) got up close home to land the card’s €17,000 Rated Race under champion jockey Colin Keane in the well-known colours of Sean Jones, but were afforded some respite when Damian English’s Alfirak (10/1, Rory Cleary) gained a first career win on just his seventh run when landing the Sevens.ie Cabs & Coaches Rentals Handicap in the colours of Damian’s main patron, Grougha Stables.

Damian trains ‘about 35 minutes down the road’ in County Dublin and can make use of the beaches at Laytown and Bettystown, ‘something the horses seem to love’. It is clearly paying dividends.

There will be more dividends on offer at Dundalk on Tuesday 10th April, the stadium’s next fixture, which will be followed by meetings
