Gerry loved fishingand shooting
GERRY Cathcart, ‘Highfields’, Doylesfort Road, Dundalk, whose death occurred recently was a devoted husband and family man.
He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the Louth County Hospital on 6 March, 2018.
Aged 70, he was a son of the late Esther and Tommy Cathcart and was originally from 4 McDonnell’s Terrace, Armagh Road.
Gerry was the youngest of seven children, and was predeceased by his brothers, Jimmy and Tommy; and sisters, Vera and Rose. His other siblings, Josie and Christy survive him.
After receiving his formal education in the De La Salle, Gerry worked in Donnelly’s chemist in Park Street, before taking up employment as a wood machinist in Duffy’s timber yard.
He then worked for a time in EJ
Kelly & Son before moving on to
Ardmac.
Throughout his life,
Gerry was a talented carpenter and worked at that for a number of years, while also carrying out work on the house he shared with his wife on
Doylesfort
Road.
Gerry married Patricia Dollard on St. Stephen’s Day, 1967, and last year the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
They had three sons, Stephen, Colin and Andrew. Andrew sadly passed away in infancy.
As a devoted father, Gerry delighted in the subsequent arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Away from family and professional life, he was an avid fisherman and loved rifle shooting.
He enjoyed going fishing with his friend Pat Rankin, and also had his own boat, off The Blue Anchor, Bellurgan Point.
Gerry enjoyed the feel of the sea air on his face when out fishing and taking part in competitions.
A member of the local rifle club, he was known as a very good shot, winning at many shooting events.
He took his sons out with him when they were younger, and Stephen went on to maintain an interest in shooting, while Colin enjoyed fishing.
At home, Gerry loved to watch snooker and darts on television.
A quiet, dignified man, he loved family life. Gerry had been ill for the last six years and was lovingly cared for by Patricia.
His family carried out to the last detail his wishes to be cremated. They were joined by friends, relations and extended family at a moving ceremony in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan, before which he reposed at home.
Gerry is survived by his wife Patricia; sons, Stephen and Colin; grandchildren, Stephanie, Daniel, Andrea, Daina and Oisín; great-grandchildren, May, Harry and Leo; brother, Christy; sister, Josie; nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends.
