Quay fate in balance

QUAY CELTIC TRIM CELTIC 2 3

QUAY’S relegation worries deepened with this defeat on Friday night at Clancy Park.

Without a game in 12 weeks, the home side made a flying start when straight from the kick-off Cody Magill audaciously put them ahead. Spotting the Trim goalkeeper off his line he struck a shot from inside his own half which carried over him and struck the underside of the bar for the linesman to signal the ball had crossed the line.

However, Quay couldn’t build on it, and the league leaders turned things right around, scoring twice before the half hour mark to take the lead. The Quay defence didn’t distinguish itself for either of the goals.

The score stood at the break with little in the way of real openings in the remainder of the half.

But Trim’s fast and elusive forwards applied the pressure after the break and had the Quay defence at breaking point a number of times before it yielded it’s reward with their third goal just over the hour mark that effectively tied up the points.

Loose marking by the home defence allowed a Trim player to convert a corner kick at the near post

The winners squandered two glorious opportunities beforehand, and goalkeeper John Rogers defied them on another occasion with a great save when an opponent burst through the home defence.

He also bravely came to his side’s rescue when advancing from his line to dive at the feet of an attacker and take the ball when once again his defence was pierced.

Colin Finan reduced the deficit late on but the home side couldn’t avoid defeat and their place in the premier division hangs in the balance with just one game to play. QUAY: John Rogers, Kevin Redmond, Stefan McKevitt, Denis Cholach, Padraig Brown, Danny Coyle, Cody Magill, Sean Hand, Eanna McArdle, Colin Finan, Martin Smith.
