Peninsula double in FAI 5s
SPAR FAI PRIMARY SCHOOLS 5S
DKIT Sports Centre played host to the SPAR FAI Primary School 5s Finals Day Programme last Wednesday. The SPAR FAI Primary Schools 5s Programme has seen participation figures grow year on year to become the largest primary schools’ competition in the country. 825 students from 42 schools participated in the Louth County Final with just six schools progressing to the provincial finals.
The ‘A’ Cup, open to boys and/or mixed teams from small schools, had four passionate schools with the final between the talented Scoil Naomh Brid Omeath team and Muchgrange Greenore team. Omeath triumphed in what was a thrilling contest.
The ‘B’ Cup, for medium sized schools, again proved to be a compelling division with 4 teams involved. The final was eventually decided on by a late goal as St Mary’s Knockbridge proving a little too strong over a talented St Mochtas side.
The ‘C’ Cup, for large schools, was another hard-fought contest between 4 very talented schools. Monastery Ardee eventually came out on top of the large school’s division after a fantastic tussle with St Mary’s Drogheda on a 5-4 score line Monastery had been 3-0 down and staged a dramatic comeback.
The winners will now progress to the North Leinster Finals on 26th April in the MDL Grounds Navan.
Participation in the girl’s division of the SPAR FAI Primary Schools 5s Programme reached an all-time high this year with 12,832 4th, 5th and 6th class girls registered.
The Girls ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ Cup finals were also held on the 11th April in the DKIT Sports centre where there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the competition.
In the Girls ‘A’ Cup, for small schools, a strong Bellurgan side defeated St Pauls Walshestown in a really exciting and hardfought match with both sides playing some excellent football.
In the Girls ‘B’ Cup Final, for medium sized schools, Ballapousta sealed qualification to the next stage after they overcame a tough challenge from Rampark from Lordship.
Tullyallen put in a fine display against St Marys of Drogheda to progress from the Girls ‘C’ Cup division for large schools. Tullyallen finished off the tournament with a 4-2 win and look in fine form heading into the North Leinster Finals.
