Cross Border Orchestra launches The Soloist 2018

The Dundalk based Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland has launched its annual competitio­n, The Soloist 2018, offering singers the opportunit­y to perform on some of the greatest stages in Ireland and the UK, from the RDS Arena in Dublin to the SSE Arena in Belfast and the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

The Soloist is an exciting talent search and is open to vocal soloists, duos and small vocal groups of no more than six people. Previous winners have joined the orchestra on their tours, which saw them perform with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland to over 40,000 people across Ireland and the UK. Last year’s winners were Katie Weir and tenor Ross Scanlon.

The cost to register is €20. Upload a video and be in with a chance to win €1,000. The semi-finals will take place in early August and the final will be held in Dublin on Sunday of August 12th.

The orchestra is also looking for new member who will join them on their concert tours. Applicants must be between 13 and 24 years and willing to attend rehearsals on Sundays in Dundalk from September to January and to take part in week-long workshops in August and December. Players of all orchestral instrument­s as well as bagpipes may join.

The young musicians, singers and dancers from the Armagh Pipers’ Club will be displaying their talents on Sunday afternoon from 4pm in the Carlingfor­d Heritage Centre.

To mark Poetry Ireland Day on Tuesday April 24th, Dundalk Library is hosting a free poetry writing workshop with John Noonan at 3pm.
