Garda warning on drunk driving after eight arrests

-

GARDAI have issued a stern warning to motorists not to drink and drive. This comes after eight people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving over the Bank Holiday weekend.

‘We are very disappointed that eight people were arrested for drunk driving over the weekend despite the high profile campaigns warning people not to drink and drive,’ said a Garda spokesperson.

He said that the arrests had followed an increased presence by the Garda Traffic Corps and regular gardai over the weekend period.

With the announcement last week that five gardai and a sergeant is being allocated to the Traffic Corps in the Louth Division, he said that ‘ there is going to be a concentrated effort over the coming months to crack down on drunk driving and other motoring offences.’

‘ The message that we want to get across to people is that if you’re going out and going to be drinking, then don’t drive.’

Earlier in the week, in what appears to be thefts to order, two BMWs were broken into and parts stolen in Dundalk.

The airbag was stolen from a BMW which was broken into at Manydown Close between 8.30pm on May 1st and 10am on May 2nd.

Part of the cowling of the steering wheel of another BMW parked in the same estate was stolen overnight on May 1st in what gardai believe was a related incident.

Anyone with any information should contact Dundalk Gardai at 042 9335577.
