Lions Club quiz for September trip away

-

ON Friday night I headed for the Railway Bar where the Dundalk Lions Club were hosting a table quiz to raise money for their senior citizens weekend away in September and a huge crowd had turned up specially to aid the cause.

I was only in the door when I met up with main organisers Mattie Pepper from Faughart and Catherine Doherty from Belfry Crescent. Mattie told me the weekend was one of the highlights of the year where they take 100 senior citizens along with 18 helpers to the city of the tribes for a fantastic three-night weekend away.

I then decided to have a look round to see who was ready to do battle and the first group I met up with included the club’s President Gerry Campbell from Blackrock there with his delightful wife Pauline, sister Katriona McCann from Jenkinstown and Austin Carroll from Dromiskin who were all looking forward to a thought provoking night.

Not too far away I then got talking to Ciaran and James Rogers from Avenue Road who were with David Larkin from St. Malachys Villas and were awaiting the arrival of Eamon Mullen from Bay Estate who were ready to take part, but weren’t going to make any predictions on how well they were going to do.

Making my way over to another table I thought I caught sight of slights glimpse of dorsal fin and got a quick word with Brian Martin from Ard Easmuinn, David Boyle, Bianca Young and Paul Boyle all from Blackrock who were prepared to admit they’d be ‘ there or there abouts’ near the end, well I did recognise Brian as the quizmaster at the recent LCC quiz night in the Lisdoo for Cara Cancer Care.

After this I headed over for a chat with Nora McCarthy from Glenwood and Maureen Loftus from Dowdallshill who told me they were definitely looking forward to the quiz.

Beside them I then got talking to Edel O’Connell from Blackrock with Mary and Hugh Coyle from Redbarns Road who were there to win and enjoy the fun on the night too.

Not too far away I then got talking to Cathy O’Kane from Castlebellingham sitting with Emmett Masterson from Longford, Bobby and Eilish McCarthy from Muirhevna who were in great form and Cathy told me they certainly weren’t there to make up the number, they were there to win!

Next I caught up with Dundalk’s answer to ‘Kim & Kanye’, yes it’s new Louth Rose AnnMarie Duffy from Glenwood and her boyfriend Rory Mulholland from Kilkerley who were in great form and told me they were awaiting the arrival of David ‘Quizmaster’ McGuinness from Blackrock and Keith Geoghegan from Kilkerley and they were going to give it their best shot.

They were sitting beside Neil Mulholland, Patrick McGee, Orlaith Mulholland and Hannah Byrne all from Kilkerley who were definitely on a positive vibe and ready for all brain teasers.

Just arrived in the door where Gerry and Ursula Fee from St. Alphonsus Road who were then joined by Fionnuala Gaffney and Jinx Conroy from Blackrock and that meant the rest of the shark teams were definitely going to be on their game.

Finally before I departed I got a swift word with Paul Burke originally from Westmeath but now hanging his hat in Tullyallen who was with Paul and Sandra Connolly from Carrickmacross and they were all waiting for Tony O’Connell to arrive from round the back in St. Malachys Villas and assured me that he would have all the answers!
