MAY 1988

-

CHEERED on by fellow students at Oriel Park, St Mary’s College win the Leinster Junior Championship at the first attempt.

The final against St. John’s De La Salle, Ballyfermot goes all the way to sudden-death penalties before captain Paul Gaughran is presented with the pennant.

The Dundalk school takes the lead in the 33rd minute. John Geraghty is tackled in possession but a sloppy back pass allows Pat McElarney challenge the ‘ keeper for possession.

The loose ball goes to Geraghty who sends it across. Ciarán Kavanagh strikes cleanly into an open net from eight yards.

Early in the second half, St. John’s are awarded a penalty when Gerry Spain is adjudged to have committed a foul. Colin Corrigan is sent the wrong way from the subsequent spot-kick.

Neither side is able to score again, so the game goes into extra-time with no further change.

There is a stroke of luck at the start of the penalty shoot-out. Spain gets a second chance and scores after the visiting ‘ keeper is pulled up for moving as the original kick is sent over the bar.

Corrigan then saves but Geraghty’s effort comes off a post into the ‘ keepers arms.

The shoot-out ends 4-4, with substitute David Coleman McElarney and Adrian O’Sullivan convert for the Marist.

Ultan McCabe scores the first sudden-death penalty before the Ballyfermot player bends his shot wide of the post.

Marist: Colin Corrigan; Martin Harvey, Niall Giblin, Adrian O’Sullivan, Pat McElarney, John Geraghty, Ultan McCabe, Gerry Spain, Paul Gaughran, Ciarán Kavanagh, Mark McGuinness.
