Angela’s passing leaves void in family

- ANGELA CALLAN 1937-2018

ANGELA Callan, Marian Park, Dundalk, who died recently was a lady devoted to her family.

She passed away peacefully on 28 April, 2018, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Angela was born on 26 August, 1937, the eldest of four children of Lily and Peter (Petey) McCourt, Oliver Plunkett Park.

After attending Castletown Girls School she went to work in Rawson’s shoe factory where she met her husband, Peadar Callan.

They were married on 5 August, 1957 and went on to have six children, while Angela and Peadar were also thrilled at the subsequent arrival of grandchildren and a great-grandson.

The couple moved to Marian Park in 1959 and quickly settled in to a friendly community where they were good neighbours to everyone.

However, she was happiest when surrounded by family. Angela was the main hub of all that went on at home in Marian Park, such was her devotion to Peadar, their children, grandchildren and great-grandson.

Angela enjoyed the garden as she loved fresh flowers. She also enjoyed watching the Soaps on television and looked forward to holidays in the sun.

Possessed of a good wit, she relished Monday night chats over a cup of tea with her life-long friend, Anne Kinahan, who was Angela’s bridesmaid at her wedding.

She was also a lady of deep faith who prayed daily to St. Anthony and St. Brigid.

Angela was predeceased by her beloved husband, Peadar only last June, and by their son, Peadar Jnr. She was also predeceased by her parents, and sister, Briege.

She is survived by her children, Ellen, Peter, Aiden, Lorraine and Samantha; ten grandchildren, great-grandson, brothers, Tommy and Peter (Scotland); sons-in-law, Peter Roe and Gerry Smartt; daughter-in-law, Marie and Peter’s partner, Didi; nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

After reposing at her residence in Marian Park Angela’s remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Redeemer where the funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Paul Montague Adm.

Readings were given by Marie and Shauna, and the prayers of the faithful led by Peter Roe, Niamh Roe, Clodagh Roe and Shane Gonnelly.

Gift’s symbolising Angela’s life were brought to the altar by Gillian Callan Smartt and Jeanine Callan, a family cushion and 60th wedding anniversary photo. Samantha and Lorraine participated in the offertory procession.

A reflection was given by Tony Holiday. Beautiful music was provided by Olivia Finnegan and Evelyn Crawley on violin and tin whistle. Singer was Mary McCabe.

The esteem in which Angela and her family are held was reflected in the numbers of people who called to the house and attended the funeral, and it is something for which her family is grateful; as well as for the care and attention she received in hospital.

Burial took place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
