Council vote for three new auto toilets

JUNE 1998

-

CLLR Johnny McGahon is the lone objector to Dundalk urban council adopting a report to install three new automatic public toilets and demolish the existing toilets at Crowe Street and The Demesne.

He speaks against at the monthly planning meeting on the grounds of the cost and points out if the same money is spent on the existing facilities it would bring them up to hotel standard.

Cllr McGahon also states the council is putting the onus of paying for the automatic conveniences on its successors, and that only one person at a time can use the new toilets.

He questions deferring payment and instead seek a bargain price and start paying now.

The evidence at the moment is that not many people use the existing automatic convenience.

The new loos, which are self-cleaning, are for Crowe Street, The Demesne and Griffith Place.

Cllr Pearse O’Hanrahan whole-heartedly welcomes the three new units, particularly as they have disabled access.

The figures quoted by Cllr McGahon include lease, purchase and servicing, he continues.

The existing toilets have outlived their usefulness, remarks Cllr Séamus Keelan in also welcoming the report.

Cllr Seán Kenna says the toilets in The Demesne are used for other purposes and asks if there will be a watch period to see if this activity stops.

He is told the new toilets are a different construction.

Cllr McGahon comments that he doesn’t think the knocking down of toilets ‘is going to cure homosexuality’.

Nine councillors vote to proceed with the new toilets.
