Fears of a generation that can’t buy own homes
A generation of young people may not have opportunity to own their own home or have a secure tenancy, according to a Louth TD.
Deputy Declan Breathnach spoke in the Dáil this week, saying that a generation of young people who had an aspiration to own their own home or have a secure tenancy in a local authority house may not have that opportunity. ‘I spent 25 years as a Councillor in Louth County Council and I would have told people in the past that if they went on the housing list, they would be waiting eight or nine years, and that was the case.
‘ The reality is now that under Louth County Council they will be waiting 16 years if they go on a housing list tomorrow. We are pretending that we are getting the solution to the problem.’
