Dermot to commemorate old friend in Lanzarote
ONE Dundalk FC legend is set to commemorate another with a special golf classic in Lanzarote this October.
Dermot Keely, a former title-winning captain and manager at Oriel Park, is hosting the Tommy Mac Golf Tournament in memory of his good friend Tommy McConville (pictured right) in Puerto del Carmen from Monday October 8th to Thursday October 11th.
The event has been organised to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the passing of his good friend Tommy. He died aged 67 on October 25th 2013 after a short battle with illness.
The six times capped Republic of Ireland international first featured for his beloved Lilywhites in 1964 and despite spells with Waterford, Shamrock Rovers, Bangor and sides in Washington and New York, would go on to play a club record 580 times for his hometown club, winning 17 honours along the way before finally hanging up his boots at the age of 40 in 1986.
In the years after his passing a golf classic was organised to remember Tommy, taking place in Ballymascanlon initially before moving on to Dundalk Golf Club.
While no event took place last year, his best friend and former team-mate Dermot Keely has revived the event in a somewhat sunnier climate.
The League of Ireland legend opened his own bar,
‘Keely’s’, in Puerto del Carmen earlier this year and a package has been put together for a golf classic at the local Golf Resort.
Dermot, along with his fiancée and business partner Jane Martin, have put together a superb package of return flights from Dublin to Lanzarote, internal transfers, three night’s accommodation and a round of golf for €385 per person sharing. A non-playing option is also available at €320. To sign up email dermotkeely1954@gmail.com or call 0034 604125579.
Those interested are asked to pay a booking deposit of €200 by Monday July 26th. Dermot said: “There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of Mac but this is a great way of remembering him and reminiscing about the past. I’m delighted to be able to sponsor the event and look forward to people coming along for what should be a great few day’s craic.”
