Big week for super

-

The Clancy Cup took centre stage this week in the Dundalk Junior Soccer League and saw Fane qualify for the final for the second successive year.

They will meet Woodview who won the top of the table clash by the odd goal in three to put out the holders Quay, thus ensuring that a new name will be inscribed on the trophy.

The competition has been dominated by Muirhevnamor, who are not competing this year, with Quay the second most successful team.

Owen Armstrong and Dean Brown nabbed a goal apiece for Woodview, while Adam Brady scored for Quay.

In the earlier round Fane overcame Walshestown two nil, and then beat bottom club Cox’s 6-2, who obtained a free passage in the draw to the semi-final, while Quay accounted for Rampart to get to the last four.

Patience Jumbo-Gula was on international duty at the European U18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary in both the 100m and medley relay.

Having recently set a new PB at a meet in Mannheim, Germany Patience came into the championships in good form. In her heat she performed strongly to win in a time of 11.80 seconds.

Despite a less than perfect start she sped to another victory in her semi final in a new championship best time of 11.56 seconds to send her into the final as one of the favorites.

In the final a tardy start all but put paid to Patience’s chance and although she battled back bravely it just was not to be and she finished 5th in the wet conditions in a time of 11.87 seconds It’s often remarked that you cannot win a 100m with your start, but you can lose it and unfortunately that was the case on this occasion.

However finishing 5th in a European final and coming back with a championship record shows that she is among the fastest around, and the opportunity to improve on some aspects and learn from her experience will prove character building and invaluable for the future, even though that might not seem apparent at the moment. In the medley relay Patience ran another fine race with the team just missing out on qualifying for the final.

On Saturday 7th July the All Ireland relay and ‘B’ Championships took place. Representing the club in the relays were the U13 girls team of Mia Keely, Nicola McElroy, Ciara Cunningham & Rachel Culligan and in the individual championships were Andrew Rosbotham and Rachel Culligan.

First up was Rachel in the U13 girls 100m. Having achieved a Pb at the Leinster Championships the hope was to improve once again. In the heat she won impressively in a new PB of 11.34 seconds.

In the final she stepped it up another level to stop the clock at 11.14 seconds to take a thrilling win an once again lower her PB.
