Fergal’s globe set to travel country for Goal’s ‘What on Earth’ project
LOCAL artist Fergal Kilkenny is one of a 100 Irish artists who were invited to paint a globe for Goal’s ‘What on Earth’ public art project. The globes will travel the country for exhibitions in Dublin, Belfast, Galway and Tipperary before being auctioned in November to raise funds for the charity.
‘I hope that my creative contribution towards Goal’s ‘What on Earth’ public arts initiative will raise much needed funds for the charity and raise awareness of the fantastic work done on a daily basis by the Goal teams on the ground in various countries,’ says the Brid-a- Crinn native.
‘ The globe I have created is a combination of two art mediums - layering using paint and hand-carved calligraphy. I have sought to create a depth to the globe – and although subtle in representation, visually highlights what many influential people feel is important in today’s world. There are perhaps two evident themes, ‘ togetherness’ and ‘ hope’.
Having graduated from DIT in 2015 with a BA in Visual Communications, Fergal was awarded a fellowship at the Scuola Internazionale Di Grafica in Venice. He also worked with Trinity College Dublin as a graphic designer leading the Department of Sport through a rebranding. He is currently undertaking his Professional Masters in Art and Design Education at Limerick School of Art and Design.
Fergal has a keen interest in socially engaging art and through his practice and teaching has engaged with many diverse cultures and social issues. Through this engagement, he has developed links with both political and cultural leaders in countries such as Tanzania, South Africa and Pakistan.
‘My background in graphic design has instilled in me that artwork we create should always have a purpose. If you are not compelled to act, then is it really worth it?’ he asks. 5
