Rock Celtic enjoy classic day of golf

-

On Friday night I headed for the Dundalk Golf Club where the Rock Celtic Golf Classic was just after finishing. With 28 teams in action throughout the day, the event was a huge success and helped as a fund raiser for the club that can boast 400 members, 300 of which are under age, with the rest made up by the u19s, Senior and Reserve teams and not forgetting the Over 35s, all catered for.

I was only in the door when I met up with the extremely hard working Assistant Manager of the Senior team Robert Cosgrove from The Loakers who told me it had turned out to be an extremely well run day with the golfers out between 12 and 4.00, the weather playing a contributing factor and wanted to thank the local businesses for their support, the Kehoe’s and Lisdoo for the food and specially Rawk Foods for the Bar-B- Q outside for all the golfers.

I then caught up with main man from Rawk Foods Anthony ‘Johnny’ Johnston who told me the burgers were nothing short of amazing and wanted to thank his waitresses Eugene Fee and David McGeough for their trojan work throughout the day.

After this unashamed plug I then headed over for a chat with Michael Hamilton and Brendan Sharkey both from Blackrock who said the day had gone well, but eventually had a problem when the red ball went missing.

Heading for an adjacent table I met Ciaran and Ultan Herr both from Blackrock who were with George Stringer (nothing to Peter I was reliably informed) who said they had a wonderful first nine, but suffered a fatigued second half, this they put down to boring conversation. Funny I never had boring conversation down as an excuse for poor play?

After this I got a word with Shaun Callan from Ard Na Mara, Gerard McArdle from Cocklehill and the man that won the longest drive Brian Mernagh from Sandy Grove. The lads were quietly confident and were all eyes on the golf shoes amongst the prizes.

A Bank Rovers man amongst the Rock Celtic crew? Yes, it was Brian Murphy from Avondale Park I met next and he was enjoying a drink with his grandson Daniel Larkin from Philadelphia and Brooke Chamberlain from Los Angeles who are home on holidays and were up for making the best of the night.

Seated close by were Brendan Rogers from Main Street, Jason Murphy from Castleblaney and Ross McGrath from Meath who were missing their fourth member Ronan Farrell from Blackrock and told me the day had been great crack and weren’t too confident on how high up the leader board they were going to finish.

But at an adjacent table I got talking to Brian Carroll from Elm Park and Paul Kavanagh from Marine Court who told me they were the overall winners along with Mark Fitzpatrick and Niall Mulanny both from Drogheda who were notable in their absence, could have something to do it being their round I was reliably informed!

Heading for another group I got a word with Des Duffy from Old Muirhevna, Laurence O’Hanlon from Redbarns Road, Terry Curtis from Greenacres and Andy McGeough from Iarla Corcoran and David Lockington.

McGeough’s Bar who said they’d enjoyed the days’ golf, the food, the craic and most of the company!

A man who was busy on the night was committee member Eugene Fee from South End who told me it was a great day and very successful for the club and the competitors too.

Meanwhile up near the bar I met up with Sean O’Connell from Bellurgan, Rory Kelledy from town, Alan McCabe and Darren Murphy from Railway Village whom had loads of birdies and eagles, but at the

end there was no sign of the yellow ball and they were all blaming Rory.

Heading for an adjacent table I met up with David and Eoin McGuinness from Dromiskin who had played with Anthony McGuinness from Heynestown and Ray Keane from Dublin who were very positive about the food, weather and crack, but, alas, were forced to look at the prizes from afar.

Not too far away I then got talking to Dave Griffin from Ballymakellett, Michael, Mark and Kay O’Sullivan all from Blackrock Cove who had had a wonderful day, the golf and company were great, but the yellow ball was ‘a bitch’, it stayed with them until after the 17th hole and then disappeared.

Finally, I caught up with party ladies Elaine, Anna, Laura and Grace Cosgrove from the Loakers who hadn’t played, but were just after arriving and were ready to make it a real night to remember and party the night away!
