Big weekend for Cuchulainn club
IT was a massive weekend for Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club with success on both a national & provincial level, as well as on & off road.
First up was another impressive performance from Jimmy Flynn whom successfully defended his Masters 60 National Hill Climb Championships.
The race was held on Scalp Mountain in County Donegal and the 5.8km climb had a very unique finish, with the last 1km being up a private concrete road, which hit a gradient of over 20% in places.
The steep gradient & slippy surface saw a lot of the weaker riders loose traction & actually have to dismount & walk. Howev- er Flynn had no such problems, claiming his 3rd national medal of the season.
On Saturday Cuchulainn hosted the traditional Traders Cup, which was first run in 1942. This year the race also hosted the Leinster Championships & Cuchulainn rider Aidan Delany claimed the provincial title in the A4 category.
Aidan won the sprint for the gold medal from a large bunch, with second place going to one of Ardee Cycling Club’s Tony Keane.
The main race was won by Andy Maguire, ahead of Liam Curley and Ronan McDonnell.
On the off road cyclocross scene the club had even more success. In Dublin on Sunday, Aaron McCann claimed 2nd in the B race in the Fixx Series. This was the second round of the series and McCann had had bad luck while running high in the first round.
Meanwhile also on Sunday, in the Ulster Cyclocross series, Rhiannon Dolan claimed a bronze medal in the under 12 girls. Also racing for the club Shane Meegan had a very good face to finish in the top 10 in the under 10 boys, despite a very bad start to the race.
The Bike Station League cyclocross saw another win for Ray O`Shaughnessey, ahead of league leader Gary Shiels.
