Celebrate International Credit Union Day this Thursday
ON Thursday, 18th October 2018, Credit Unions in County Louth, across Ireland and around the world will join in celebrating International Credit Union Day and the critically important role Credit Unions play in meeting the financial and social needs of ordinary people and in helping to build sustainable communities.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union difference. All Credit Unions are proud to emphasise the positive impact Credit Unions have in their communities. All around the world, the Credit Union cooperative spirit is embraced by more than 235 million members served by 68,000 credit unions in 109 countries worldwide.
In Ireland today over 3 million people are members of Credit Unions all working together to achieve economic progress. Credit unions play a vital role in the economic development and stability of the communities they serve, helping people improve their lives through access to affordable financial services.
Billy Doyle, CEO of Dundalk Credit Union, Market Street, speaking ahead of International Credit Union Day said, “we’re really excited to be joining with our Credit Union colleagues across the country and around the world to celebrate the emphasis that the Credit Union movement places on the importance of people and of being at the centre of the communities we serve. The unique difference of being member owned allows us to work together to give back to our community and enrich the lives of our members.
Billy added that “We’re delighted to report – in this, Dundalk Credit Union’s 50th Anniversary Year – that we’ve had a very good financial performance in 2018, we’ve welcomed more than 2100 new members during the year and have had very strong growth in lending volumes on the back of a significant increase in loan applications. We said yes to 92% of all loan applications received during the year.
This International Credit Union Day, we invite everyone to join us to celebrate the Credit Union difference, its proud cooperative heritage, and the wonderful opportunities Credit Union membership offers the people of Ireland.”
If you have not already done so, why not join your local Credit Union today and become part of a growing worldwide phenomenon.
