A 23-year-old man accused of drink driving has had his case adjourned after a dispute arose over the evidence.

Ciarán Mulholland, 23 Keady Road, Cornonagh, Ballsmill, Newry, denies the alleged offence on 27 October, 2017.

The defendant had failure to produce insurance and driving licence charges in Crowe Street, Dundalk, on the same occasion struck out.

Garda Blaine said that at 1.21am on the date in question on Clanbrassi­l Street he saw a Toyota Avensis driving erraticall­y. It was swerving from side-to-side.

This vehicle continued on to Crowe Street before stopping in St Patrick’s Cathedral car-park.

The driver exited and had to lean on the vehicle to steady himself.

On seeing gardaí he ran away in the direction of Crowe Street.

Garda Blaine continued he shouted numerous times for the defendant to stop but he failed so to do.

The officer added he eventually stopped Ciarán Mulholland. There was a smell of drink from him, his speech was slurred and he was on steady on his feet.

At 1.25am Garda Blaine arrested the accused in Crowe Street.

When the charge was subsequent­ly put to him he replied, ‘I was just drink driving. Leave me alone.’

Mulholland later gave an over the limit breath sample.
