Peter’s crew perform well in cross country

-

DAY two of the Louth Cross Country Championships took place in the fabulous Autumn sunshine at DKIT on Sunday last.

There was a big turn out of both athletes and supporters and all were treated to a great day of athletics. Niamh Brady who has recently rediscovered her appetite for distance running, ran a great race over the 3,500m U15 course and finished strong to pull away to claim a very deserved bronze individual medal.

Ava Plunkett who is competing in her first year for the St Peters club ran very bravely and the experience will stand to her in the year ahead. The program commenced with the U9 girls race and Aoibhinn Boyle ran very well and unfortunate to finish just outside the medals.

The boys U9 race was next and the St Peters Club had three athletes take part and all three ran wonderfully with both Cain Murtagh and Liam McKeown finishing in the top ten and winning medals in 4th and 7th places respectively. Cian Smyth wasn’t to far behind either finishing just outside the medal positions.

The under 11 Girls race had a team compete for the Dromiskin based club and all ran very strongly, the team was led home by Orla McLoughlin, who was closely followed by Emily OReilly, Catherine Carey and Hannah O’Reilly. The boys under 11 race had three St Peters Athletes, Donnacha Reidy who made a fantastic debut last week proved that that was no fluke with a fifth place Finish in the much longer race out of his age, Ruirhi Carpenter and Jon McKevitt both ran well in the same race and both are improving with each race.

The girls under 13 was a very competitive race and the St Peters team had a successful outing winning the team bronze medal, the team was led home by Dearbhla Allen who moved up an age to help our team mates came in 5th overall, Ellie Smyth finished strong in 9th place closely followed by Isabeal Fitzpatrick and the final member of the team was Lucy Brennan who although would be more of a Sprints and jumps Athlete pulled on the club singlet and deserves great credit for doing so.

The boys under 13 team went one better when they won the team silver medals, Harry O’Reilly continued his rich vein of form finishing in fourth place with Cormac McKeown coming in in seventh closely followed by his younger brother Ben with Conor Litchfield finishing very strong to complete the team.

The last race with St Peters Athletes involvement was the boys U15 race, Mark Litchfield led the team home closely followed by Dean Murtagh, Cian Gorham and Sean Allen.

The very first race of the day was the women’s Intermediate race and Sarah McCann was the lone St Peters participant and Sarah ran very well representing the club with pride.

The next event on the Cross Country calendar is the Kearney and McBride Cup, which is an annual event hosted by the Glenmore AC.

The event commenced at twelve as is followed by their 5K road race.
