Never-say-die spirit of U-18 team is clear for all to see

-

BEFORE the weekend game between the Dundalk/Ardee Under-18 boys and MU Barnhall had even kicked off the home side were at a disadvantage - unable to field a full team.

This, added to by early injuries, took their tally down to just 12 players on the pitch and a mammoth task was in hand.

Despite this the Dundalk/ Ardee side were the first to advance and grab the first score of the game, but as the pressure mounted the MU Barnhall side were clinical in their approach and quick to capitalise on the Dundalk/ Ardee side’s difficulty with numbers.

As well as that, the Louth side had to do a fair bit of shifting positions, with James Reilly having to move from his usual number 8 slot to start at inside centre and David Murdock moving from outside centre during the game to full back.

While it was a tough and bruising encounter tinged with immense frustration for the players and their coaching team, this group of players never gave up, battling to the death with very little left in the tank.

There were some fine individual performances on the day, with great skill and ball-carrying leading to the two Dundalk/Ardee tries of the game.

The first, scored early on, was a huge team effort from a ruck and following a number of phases of pick and go, with sheer skill and determination Cathal Purcell burst over the line. That try was converted by Gavin Farrell.

The second touchdown came from a move which saw David Murdock chase after a ball kicked long by Gavin Farrell.

Murdock’s speed and agility saw him beat his MU Barnhall opponents who had given chase and he grounded the ball for the home side, just in advance of the final whistle, with Farrell again landing the extras.

While the Dundalk/Ardee side came out on the wrong side of the scoreline on the day, they displayed bravery, skill and passion to keep the momentum going to the final whistle.

It was a mammoth challenge and they faced it with brave heart and fortitude.

THE battle for the last Murphy’s Meigh sponsored Silver Medal and a place in the final 8 to contest for the gold medal produced some great scoring but in the end by his own admission the ‘greatest no 1 of all time’ Benny Tierney (11) despite a hiccup at his penultimate hole went round the course 2 over Par which gave him another winners medal.

Benny’s nett 61 had him 2 shots clear of second placed Paul Lambert (18) with Colin McParland (13) taking third place on the countback from Fintan McAleenan (15) after both returned 64’s. Daniel Hughes (6) was the winner of the Gross.

Single figures then for Benny as these new irons are beginning to sparkle and he will be favourite to land the Gold Medal on Sunday week as he lines up alongside previous Monthly Medal winners, March-James Maguire April-Club Captain Paddy Malone May-Martin Gill June-Joe Hassard July-Larry O Rourke August-Paul Owens September-Anthony O’Hare.

NOEL Reid (13) took full advantage of perfect weather conditions to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition, with his 21 points down the back nine enough to pip David Murden (9) on countback after both carded rounds of 39pts.

Reid got off to the perfect start with a birdie three for four points on the first hole and although he only picked up one point from the two par fives he managed to cover the front nine in 18pts.

Three consecutive pars at the 11th, 12th and 13th yielded eight points and he also managed to pick up another eight points as he parred the final three holes on his way to a back nine return of 21pts and signed for an overall score of 39pts.

Murden had the consolation of taking Cateogry 1 from Damien Garland (7) who shot 38pts while Paddy Duffy (13) took Category 2 with 36pts despite playing with an ice cold putter.
