Wonderful turnout as Glenmore host cross country races

THERE was a wonderful turnout of juvenile clubs from Louth and neighbouri­ng counties, north and south as Glenmore AC hosted the Kearney and McBride Cross Country races at Bush on Sunday.

Prizes were on offer for the top 10 in each age category as well as an overall prize of the Johnny Mullen Cup for the best club on the day.

As expected there was a huge Glenmore contingent with many of our young athletes competing for the first time at a cross country event.

There were medal winners on the day across all age categories.

Zoe White and Cliodha Reilly fought out a great U9 500m with the lead changing hands between both on numerous occasions, Zoe finished 2nd with club mate Gillian Tuohy also in the medals in 6th position.

Jessica White was a medal winner in the U11 800m and Elliot Nichols and Peadar Walsh also took medals in the boys 800m. Ava Ashby finshed in 8th position in the girls U13 1500m with Fionn O Reilly also taking a medal in the Boys U13 event. Lisa Conlon was 3rd in the U15 2000m with the top three athletes pushing each other to the end; she was followed by Ava Brady and Claudia Mullen also in medal positions.

James Dunne, Gary Conway and Sean O Kane all were top 10 finishers in the boys U15 2000m.

The U17 and U19 3000m ran simultaneo­usly with Zofia Mullen taking 2nd in the U17 and Anna Mai Mullen taking gold and Katie Mallon silver in the U19. Glenmore’s Ciaran Flynn finished 3rd in the boys U17 3000m.

It was a very successful day for the Glenmore club as Boyne AC retained the Johnny Mullen Cup with 125 points: the most successful juvenile club on the day.

The 5km road race commenced at 1pm and it was prizes galore for Glenmore senior athletes.

First place went to Tomas Cotter 15:52 (Dunleer AC) and he was followed home by Shane Toner in 16:19 (Glenmore AC). In 3rd place was Brian Mc Cluskey 16:24 (NER) who is making a speedy recovery after a recent injury.

First female was won by Amy Bulman 18:52 ( Willowfiel­d Harriers), 2nd was Maura Kearns 19:30 (Donore Harriers) and 3rd was Rose Lambe 20:15 (Carrick Aces).

First team prizes went to the Glenmore senior male team of Shane Toner, Shane Lynch and Donal Mc Moreland who were presented with the Kearney Cup and Glenmore female team of Kinga Byrne, Liz Rafferty and Joanne Hoyne who were also presented with The Mc Bride Cup by Kenneth Mc Bride.

Annandale Striders were the second male team, while Glenmore athletes Liz Rafferty, Stephanie Malone and Noeleen Hallahan picked up prizes within their age categories.

Age category prizes were also awarded to Ursula Noone (NER) 1st O/45F, Patricia Mulholland (NER) 1st O/55F, Isolde Goggin 2nd O/55F, Thomas Carson (Willowvale Harriers)1st O/45M, Shane Boyle 2nd O/45M (Dunshaugli­n AC), Pat Mc Elarney 3rd O/45M(NER) Gerard Kenny 1st O/55M (NER), Andrew Rogers 2nd O/55M (Togher Runners) and Martin Reilly 3rd O/55M.

The Glenmore AC athletes who competed included Shane Toner, Shane Lynch, Donal Mc Moreland, Ciaran Walsh, Kevin Harnet, Patrick White, Kenneth McBride, Gerard White, Gavin White, Leigh Nichols, Kinga Byrne, Joanne Hoyne, Liz Rafferty, Stephanie Malone and Noeleen Hallahan.

The club extends a huge thank you to all who came out to support and cheer on the runners and to all the stewards and canteen ladies for their invaluable service.

Next up for the senior athletes is the Dublin Marathon while John Doyle who is also competing later in the week at the Venice Marathon.
