DOG TRACK ON THE MARKET
OCTOBER 1998
ONE of the most intriguing packages of inner-town property to come up for sale for some time is Dundalk greyhound stadium on The Ramparts, the details of which are released.
It is for sale by private tender, the closing date being Friday, 20 November.
Ideally situated on the Ramparts Road, and suited to a number of purposes, the property comprises approximately 9.25 acres.
The sale is made possible by the plan to relocate greyhound racing to the Racecourse Road in a joint venture with Dundalk Race Company, and Dundalk urban council recently rezones the property for general business use to enable this to happen.
It is regarded as an unprecedented opportunity to acquire a substantial site in the heart of Dundalk.
The property is suitable for retail/commercial/residential, subject to planning, and while the selling agents won’t speculate as to how much it might fetch, it will take a substantial tender to buy it. STEPHEN Staunton takes to the field at Lansdowne Road for his first senior international.
He plays for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly against Tunisia, which finishes 4-0 in favour of the hosts in front of a 12,000 crowd.
The Dundalk nineteen-year-old rates highly with Irish manager Jack Charlton, who comments: ‘He has a great left foot and has all the ingredients of becoming a really good player.’
It is all happening for Staunton who also makes a breakthrough into Liverpool’s first team.
Charlton doesn’t rule out the possibility of a place in the squad for next month’s World Cup qualifier against Spain.
First half goals from Tony Cascarino (2) and John Aldridge put Ireland in a strong position at Lansdowne before Kevin Sheedy adds a fourth late on.
Team: Gerry Peyton, John Anderson, Mick McCarthy (captain), Chris Morris, Stephen Staunton, Ray Houghton, Liam O’Brien, Kevin Sheedy, John Aldridge, Tony Cascarino, Mark Kelly. Subs., David Kelly for Houghton, Pat Scully for Morris, Niall Quinn for Aldridge, Ken De Mange for Cascarino.
