All set for Louth Science Festival
LOUTH’S first Science Festival is taking place in the county’s libraries from November 6 to 17 with a host of events for all ages.
There’s an impressive programme of events running in the branch libraries throughout the county thanks to funding from the Science Foundation Ireland. SPEAKING at the launch, Louth County Council Director of Service Joe McGuinness said the festival will give ‘ communities across Louth fun opportunities to experience science and its applications in an exciting and stimulating way’. COUNTY librarian Yvonne O’Brien said ‘ The collaborative aspect of Louth Science Festival is really exciting as it allows us bring science to life for the students and the public in general. Working together has been key to the successful roll-out of this programme and so a big thanks must go to our partners in industry, such as Creative Spark, Listoke Gin, Foodee, the Great Northern Larder and Teagasc and to schools and the facilitators in DkIT.’
THE festival sees over 50 events aimed at primary and secondary schools, as well as the general pub- lic, taking place in the libraries in Dundalk, Drogheda, and Ardee, with outreach events in schools in Carlingford and Dunleer. PUBLIC events include workshops on the science behind bee keeping; gin making; the HPV virus and vaccine; food and fermentation; and cyberbullying, and a career panel talk on a day in the life of a STEM professional, as well as fun workshops on all aspects of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.
