and Cork haven’t been great watches and Shields feels that is a prospect once again on Sunday, with neither side willing to give up an inch.

‘They’ve been really tight games but that shows how far we push each other, ourselves and Cork. I’ve seen a lot of neutrals giving out saying they want to see a change but what can ourselves and Cork do? Go out and lose on purpose to suit the public? It’s a testament to ourselves and Cork to be there for the fourth year running.

‘I think particularly in the Cup they tend to be dull games because there is so much at risk and because you’re on such a platform. It’s kind of built up as the biggest game in the League of Ireland calendar, albeit ourselves and Cork would think the league is more important. There is such a build up to it though and it’s a platform for the whole country to see you.

‘On the day it’s not about performance though when you win. People only remember the winners so it does tend to be dull but you can only take how it comes on the day. There’s no way to plan for it. I’m sure we’ll prepare as we always do for these games and go in with the mindset of trying to win and I’m sure Cork will too.’

Shields has already sunk Cork once this season. Could he saving up another big goal for Sunday?

‘I’ll take one more but I’d be happy for anybody to get it as well. It’s a chance for someone to step up to the plate and hopefully it is one of our boys,’ he said.
