Dundalk then had Gary Rogers to thank for keeping them in the game. He pulled off a stunning double save on the half hour mark firstly to deny Keith Ward low to his right. He then got up to push Kevin Devaney’s follow up around the post.

Rogers again showed his class three minutes later when Bohs broke at pace from a corner. Ward looked like he would double the advantage for Keith Long’s men but Rogers got his right foot out to deny him.

Dundalk’s best chance of an equaliser before the break came on 36 minutes when McEleney picked out Duffy on the left. His low shot looked destined to find the net but Dan Casey got across to deflect it over the bar.

Bohs continued to press on the restart with Rogers saving from Kelly before Corcoran was denied a second by the post.

Dundalk’s performance up to that was summed up on 53 minutes when Hoban robbed Ian Morris to break into the Bohs box. However, his lay off to Duffy saw the winger blaze high and wide.

The visitors began to grow into the game in the latter stages with Connolly going close with an effort at the back post before a superb McEleney run and shot was blocked by Rob Cornwall at the expense of a corner.

The equaliser finally arrived on 78 minutes when Cleary headed home from Duffy’s corner but the celebrations at the goal were tainted by the sight of Hoban in distress on the ground.

His replacement Georgie Kelly then almost played a part in a 90thminute winner. His shot on the turn from Duffy’s cross was blocked by Cornwall. The rebound fell to McEleney 12 yards out but he blazed over.

A game with little to play for could ultimately prove to be a costly night for Dundalk. We can only hope that is not the case.
