Cherish Kenny for as long as we have him

WHAT can be said that hasn’t already been said about the success of Dundalk FC since the arrival of Stephen Kenny. These are heady, heady days for football supporters in the town.

Headlines in the Monday papers, rightly praised the manager and the team following their FAI Cup Final win over Cork City to seal the league and cup double, their second in four years.

Yet some of the headlines made you scream, as they called for Stephen Kenny to be the next Irish manager.

The language turned blue as you read those headlines which were repeated on news bulletins throughout the day.

We want Kenny to stay of course we do, who in their right mind would want to see the end of his reign at Oriel Park.

Yet we must acknowledg­e that Stephen Kenny has earned the right to be considered as a candidate for the Irish job when it next comes up and who would or could stand in his way, as much as we would absolutely loathe to lose him.

Hopefully he will get the opportunit­y to lead the Republic of Ireland, but down the line, way down the line, in a few years time after he guides the Lilywhites to more domestic and European success.

For now we want him to stay, stay forever if he wants, but managing Ireland would be the pinnacle for any Irish

profession­al football manager and if the opportunit­y arises we must be realistic and know that it would be an opportunit­y he could not turn down. Why should he.

For now though, the job is not open and we treasure his skill and acumen as a manager, the team he has built and the way that he and his team have given us so much to smile about.
