Medals are mounting for John

- JAMES ROGERS

IT has been a tough year for John Mountney but he’s delighted to be finishing it with a smile on his face and another couple of medals to add to his collection.

The Mayo man suffered a knee injury in the Malone Cup at the start of the year that dogged him throughout the year, meaning he missed a lot of the campaign.

However, the winger re- turned in recent weeks to help Dundalk over the line in the league and to a second double in four seasons in yesterday’s FAI Cup final.

It brings to 10 the number of medals that Mountney has won at Oriel Park and with a two year deal recently signed, the 25-year-old is hopeful that there are plenty more ahead.

‘It’s tremendous,’ he said of the 2-1 victory over Cork.

‘What a way to finish the year, to do the double. It’s a great feeling. It’s not often done so to do it again today is fantastic.

‘It’s hard when you’re injured. There were a few of us in the same boat, out and coming back and then going out again. I’m just delighted to be able to finish the year strongly, to be involved in the finish of the league and to be involved in a day like today.

‘It’s brilliant stuff. Four league titles, the second cup and two doubles. It has been unbelievable,’ he said.

With most of this year’s side signed up for next season, Mountney feels Dundalk can push on in 2019 like they did after their last double in 2015.

‘Most of us are still here, which is the great thing.

‘It’s funny how it works, we’ve just won the double and someone said if we had won the EA Cup it would have been the treble. That’s always the mind-set here and it’s great to be that way,’ he said.
