UNCERTAINTY OVER BREXIT AGREEMENT
Uncertainty remains over the Brexit agreement, and preprations should be made for a ‘no deal scenario’, according to Louth TD Declan Breathnach.
‘It is a worry that there is no serious contingency plan for a no-deal Brexit and our Government has been operating on the basis of an agreement,’ Deputy Breathnach said
He warned that the UK government had ‘published 85 guidance notes on a no-deal Brexit scenario covering a range of possible areas affected, from consumer rights to climate change, medicines, blood and blood products and many more.’
He added that young people were set to be most affected if no deal is reached.
‘Young people have never known a hard border and they have never witnessed the terrible violence of the past and do not wish to return to it. They say that they are being completely ignored and do not have a government in the North to speak up for them, even though the majority of the North voted to remain.’
‘Whether the deal gets through or not, there is no Brexit outcome that is economically good for Ireland or indeed for these islands. But one thing is for sure, we need to plan for the no deal scenario.
Meanwhile Louth TD Fergus O’Dowd has called for businesses Brexit preparations to continue.
‘ The EU and Ireland have delivered a deal that guarantees no hard border in Ireland, now we have to see if Westminster votes for it sometime in December.’ He added that multimillion euro supports have been put in place across government from grants, seminars, site visits, supply-chain mapping and loans.
‘ The work on Brexit preparedness continues. Events outside our control will have a serious determination on what kind of Brexit lies in store. We must be Brexit ready.’
