Gas safety in the home this winter

AN increasing number of homes are using gas for cooking, heating and provide hot water as it is convenient and efficient. However we cannot take our boilers, cookers, gas fires and other appliances for granted as safe. The normal wear and tear as well as the effects of the combustion process affect the operation of our appliances. It is important that everyone understands how to be gas safe at home.

1. Get your boiler serviced once a year by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). When servicing your boiler, the RGI can also, if requested, carry out a safety inspection (Annex E). The RGI may be able to rectify any defect if found and if you wish. Otherwise the RGI will issue a Notification of Hazard(s) for any non-conformance or unsafe situation. It is then the responsibility of the owner / occupier to arrange the rectification of the defects, which must be carried out by an RGI.

2. Make sure you always use a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). An RGI has the required safety qualifications to carry out gas work in your home. Each RGI will carry a valid ID Card. If you suspect an installer is not registered, please let us know by using the report an illegal gas installer.

3. Installing an audible, carbon monoxide alarm may alert you of the presence of poisonous gas carbon monoxide (CO) produced by unsafe gas appliances.

4.If you smell gas and suspect a gas leak, turn off your gas at the meter contact one of the registered gas installers in your area or follow the Gas Networks Ireland Safety Advice.
