Honours even for Glen and Bridgeside at the Friary Field

- NORTH LOUTH WINTER LEAGUE

BRIDGESIDE and Glen United met in the Friary field on a wet Sunday morning last. Glen United’s only reverse this season was against Greenfield while Bridgeside have hit a recent golden patch with wins against Ramparts and Greenfield.

Bridgeside were the more attack minded from the start and could have taken the lead after five minutes when an Andy Grey free kick was somehow tipped over the bar by Danny Watters in the Glen goals. Bridgeside kept up the pressure with numerous scoring chances but the Glen back four of Ciaran O’Hare, Matt McDonald, Cormac Barry and David Grey were fit to handle all Bridgeside could throw at them.

On the 20th minute, Damian Conlon played a one/two with John McCrave but only a last ditch tackle by Cormac McCann avoided a certain goal. But Glen had their chances also. Brendan McCann played Stephen Ferguson in but John Mackin got his hand to the ball and deflected it for a corner.

Glen applied more pressure in the second half on the Bridgeside defence and should have taken the lead when a David Steele pass put Brendan McCann in the clear. He beat the keeper only to see his shot go wide off the post.

Chances fell to both sides with Sean Gallagher coming very close for Bridgeside. But on the 68th minute mark Stephen Ferguson and David Steele combined to put Phillip Martin in the clear and Martin made no mistake when he lobbed the keeper from a very acute angle to put Glen a goal up.

It was backs to the wall stuff for Glen after that and Bridgeside thought they had equalised on the 78th minute when a Caoighain Gemerision effort was somehow cleared off the line by Mark Meehan.

But on the 80th minute Bridgeside won a corner and Frankie Lane rose highest to head home a deserved equaliser for Bridgeside.

Best for Bridgeside were Frankie Lane, Leo Gallagher and Sean Kelleher. For Glen, David Steele, Philip Martin, Ciaran O’Hare, Matthew McDonald, Cormac Barry and David Grey were in fine form.
