A new community-linked Cardiac First Responder (CFR) scheme has been organised in Ardee.

It follows a meeting in October when a number of volunteers signed up to be involved and receive training.

The aim is that within the shortest time possible, a local voluntary Cardiac First Responder who has a defibrillator, will be able to assist somebody in the local area in an immediate time-frame, when a phone-call has been made to 999/112 to report symptoms of choking, stroke, chest pains or cardiac arrest. The local CFR is alerted at the same time as the ambulance and is dispatched by ambulance control.

In many medical emergencies, people can die within the first few minutes. It is also known that if certain simple but crucial interventions can be performed within those first few minutes, lives can be saved. This is especially true for strokes, heart attacks and choking which may cause a person to lose consciousness. The possibility of reviving someone suffering from a cardiac arrest reduces by 10% per minute.

As part of the service, the group now need to do some fundraising to buy equipment and they are holding a Quiz Night at St. Mary’s GFC on Wednesday 5th December. The countdown is on for the Ardee Christmas Food and Craft Fair on December 9th in Muldoons Luna Nightclub. There will be lots of craft and food stands on the day and plenty of family fun including a free Santa visit with gift and kids Craft area. Doors open 10am to 6pm and admission is free.
