- BY OLIVIA RYAN

Dundalk born artist Eimear Murphy has been awarded a prestigious Next Generation bursary worth €20,000 by the Arts Council, the state agency for funding and developing the arts has announced.

The Next Generation programme recognises and promotes a selection of artists from different disciplines, such as traditional arts, music, dance, film, theatre and literature, and gives them the time they need to develop their practice.

Awarded with €20,000 each, Eimear is just one of 18 innovative artists from across the country who have been given Next Generation awards.

Arts Council Director Orlaith McBride said: ‘What makes the Next Generation award special is that it identifies an artist at an early but pivotal moment in his or her career.’

She added: ‘ Our investment buys them time, and the opportunity to engage with mentors or other supports that we hope will have a transformative impact on their work in future years.’

A fomer student at St. Vincent’s Secondary School pupil Eimear Murphy is already a distinguished artist.

Graduating from the Nation- al College of Art and Design in 2015 in Fine Art Painting and History of Art, Eimear was then awarded Fire Station Artists’ Studios Sculpture Workshop, Graduate Residency. There she realised a landmark sculpture commission from Dublin Port Company. ‘Drop’ is on permanent display the Dublin Port’s sculpture Garden on Alexandra Road in the city.

She has exhibited throughout Ireland, most notably ‘Industry’ 2018 Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, ‘LACUNA’ 2017 Taylor Galleries, Dublin and ‘Veins’ 2016 Molesworth Gallery, Dublin.
