Council plans for new Greenway
PLANS to develop a new greenway linking north Louth to Blackrock were mooted at the monthly meeting of the Dundalk Municipal District Committee.
Councillor Maeve Yore had queried whether the local authority had been able to avail of any additional funding for greenway projects in the Dundalk area.
Director of Service, Frank Pentony told the meeting that an application for funding had gone in for a proposed 20 kilometres stretch of greenway.
If successful, this would link the Ballymascanlon roundabout and Blackrock with a pathway similar to that which was launched between Omeath and Carlingford.
He explained that with works on sea defences set to be carried out along the coast of Blackrock, it was an ideal opportunity to seek funding for a greenway project to be developed at the same time.
Mr. Pentony said this was the strategy used when plans were being made for the greenway from Omeath to Carlingford, when a water main was being installed.
He added that they were ‘ trying to be a bit clever’ in how they approached the funding application, and although there were no guarantees this would work, they were hopeful that it would be successful.
An exact location as to where the greenway would begin and end wasn’t available as yet, but the council were looking at around the Ballymascanlon junction.
If the plans are successful it would be the latest link in a greenway for pedestrians. cyclists etc which could eventually run from Newry to Dundalk along the stunning north Louth coastline.
