Big increase in green fees at local course

DECEMBER 1988

-

THE improved condition of the course and its widespread recognition as among the best in the country is reflected in a better financial position outlined to members at Dundalk golf club’s annual meeting.

Visitors’ green fees are up almost £7,000 to £25,223 and along with a strict control on ex- penditure this helps the club to an overall trading profit of £9,515, compared to £5,923 in 1987.

The 65th AGM confirms the election of outgoing vice-captain Seán Hession as the new captain in succession to Pat Hallahan. Leo O’Callaghan takes over as vice-captain.

Dr. John Kidney is re-elected president and Joe Leonard as honorary secretary. There are just three nominations for vacancies on the council and these are filled by Brendan Cleary, Dermot O’Callaghan and Joe Carroll.

During general discussion reference is made to plans to improve the clubhouse. Suggestions are invited and Mr. Hallahan gives an assurance no work will be undertaken without first consulting members.

Former captain Pat Brennan captures the mood when he says it is good to hear no criticism of the course in contrast to recent meetings.

This is obviously due to the fact there are dramatic improvements in the track’s condition.

He thanks former greenkeeper Paul Keane and new greenkeeper Ollie English, as well as chairman of the course committee Jim Dearey.

The course is among the best inland courses in the country and is earning the recognition it deserves.

However, there are appeals from Dr. Kidney and Jim Corr for members to respect the course by preserving it, and in this way, they could contribute to the advances which are made.

The meeting ends with a minute’s silence for members who pass away during the year.
