Minister sees flooding damage on Ardee Road
MINISTER Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran saw first hand the lasting damage caused by flooding in the Mounthamilton area of the Ardee Road.
The Minister of State was in Dundalk announcing €92k funding under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme - €76,500 for Salterstown and €16,200 for Seabank Castlebellingham.
‘As Vice- Chair of Louth County Council, I welcomed Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran to the County Council offices. We discussed plans to for permanent flood defences for the county and the possibility of constructing a greenway from Ballymacscanlon to Blackrock as part of that work.’
Having visited the Shore Road with officials from the Office of Public Works (OPW), an area vulnerable to flooding, he also travelled to the Ardee Road which has been flooded extensively in the past.
Councillor Maria Doyle had also asked the Minister to meet with residents from the Ardee Road who were impact by flooding in the area over the years.
‘I asked Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran to meet on his visit to Dundalk with residents of the Ardee Road who have suffered badly due to flooding.’
The National CFRAM project announced for Louth last year will hopefully allievate the flooding in the long term, but today he discussed possible short/medium term solutions for the Ardee Road area.’
Residents were able to point to the significant damage caused by repeated flooding, which forced some residents out of their homes, and resulted in parts of the road which had been washed away.’
Among the solutions being discussed were advancing the pipe along Hill Street Bridge which it is hoped will drain Balmer’s Bog when heavy rainfall hits, and therefore reduce the risk of flooding further down the Ardee Road.
