Minister on visit to Faughart graveyard
THE historical significance of Faughart graveyard was highlighted during a visit by Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran to north Louth last week.
The Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief was in Louth to announce new flood defences funding, and made a visit to Faughart cemetery after appeals by Councillor Maeve Yore.
‘We started in County Hall where he and Office Public Works (OPW) met with Council officials, elected reps and Oireachtas members. He said all politicians have to work together to maximise delivery of flood defences,’ explained Cllr Yore.
At previous council meetings,Cllr. Yore had voiced the need for the ownership of Faughart graveyard to be established
‘ The Minister and OPW officials agreed to meet the heritage officer and Faughart graveyard relatives who gave him a thorough insight into the huge historical significance of Faughart. The OPW have committed to check if they can source ownership and see what may be achieved.’
Councillor Conor Keelan also lobbied for movement on Old Faughart graveyard, joining the Minister’s visit to the area. ‘We had a productive discussion about the need to get clarification on what body will take responsibility for the graveyard going forward,’ said Cllr. Keelan.
‘Once this is established with the OPW)then it greatly assists in the development of its heritage and tourism potential for St Brigid, Edward Bruce among others and necessary improvements to the cemetery currently done by local volunteers.’
