A series of events are taking place this weke to celebrate the life and lasting legacy of Brigid of Faughart.

A local committee hosted a walk on Sunday last across the traditional route Brigid is said to have taken from Mount Avenue to Faughart.

‘People are drawn to her shrine at Faughart because of the deep peace they experience there,’ said Dolores Whelan, who has been organising events for many years to mark the legacy of Brigid.

‘People, of all ages and from all walks of life, come to Faughart throughout the year to honour and pray to Brigid.’

She added: ‘However on La Feile Bhride , which falls on Friday, February 1st, people come in their multitudes.

On this special day the shrine at Faughart is thronged with pilgrims who come to invoke Brigid’s blessing on their emerging lives.’

The feast is also symbolic of the emerging season of Spring.

Dolores explained that as part of the La Fheile Bhride and the festival of Imbolc 2019, there will be a celebration held in the Oratory at Faughart Shrine later this week. The area has been associated with St. Brigid for centuries, and is thought to have been her place of birth.

The event entitled ‘In Darkness comes forth the Light’ will be held on Thursday January 31st at 7.30pm in The Oratory at Faughart Shrine.

‘Join Eve Bourton and friends in celebrating the return of the creative compassionate and loving light of Brigid, Goddess and Saint, on the eve of Brigid’s day,’ said Dolores.

‘With wonderful songs , magical sound vibrations, meditation, spoken word we invoke Brigid to return to her birth place(Faughart ) and to spread her healing mantle over all the land on this special night We ask that she will also awaken the beautiful light that shines in each of our hearts.’

As part of the event on the eve of the Feast day, Eve Bourton will perform songs celebrating Brigid’s life.
