Grand parents Day in St Fursey’s NS
A day for grandparents forms one of the highlights of the school year in Saint Fursey’s School and again will be held this Wednesday.
Grandparents are extended the invitation to be guests of the school for the day, with the event to be run in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week.
It is an event that has become part of the school calendar over the last number of years, and is keenly looked forward to by grandparents and pupils when they get to share their experiences and memories of school.
There is a lot to be learned by both parties, and it is an occasion enjoyed by all parties involved, including teachers and staff.
Some pleasant surprises can crop up and this year might be one of those occasions.
The grandparents are taken into their grandchildren’s’ classroom and entertainment laid on by the children, and there is the opportunity to compare notes between today’s school days and when the visitors attended, and the facilities .
A special Mass is celebrated in the adjacent Geraldines clubrooms, in which some of the grandparents and children take part.
Refreshments are served which helps give an air of informality and relaxation to the event.
The event underlines the important part that grandparents play in grandchildren’s lives. With work and lifestyle changing so much they are very active in the role of rearing and minding them, with in a lot of instances both parents required to work, often quite a distance from home.
In some instances pupils might not have grandparents or they live quite far from the school. Pupils can invite along a relative/s in their place.
