Car ling ford Celtic go top with finewin
Champions, Carlingford Celtic, went top of the North Louth Winter League following a 2-1 victory over leaders, Greenfield, on Sunday last, January 27.
Despite playing against a very strong wind, Celtic started off the stronger team and dominated the first half. They eventually took the lead in the 20th minute when a free kick from Shane Marks evaded everyone in the box and ended in the back of the net. Carlingford were pressing forward at every opportunity but Greenfield were using the long ball to good effect.
At the start of the second half Greenfield upped the pace and both teams had chances before Greenfield equalised in the 50th minute. Following a neat build up, Lee Price for Greenfield found himself in the penalty box but a brilliant tackle from Paddy Hanlon cleared the danger. To the amazement of everyone in the ground, referee Mickey Clarke pointed to the penalty spot and Wright coolly converted the spot kick to level the match.
Both teams were attacking at will and both goalkeepers kept pulling off good saves. In the last 20 minutes Carlingford were in the ascendancy and took the lead on the 70th minute when a flick-on by Colm Farrell was handled in the box by David Needham. Michael Rafferty made no mistake from the spot with a powerful shot. Greenfield pressed for an equiliser bur Carlingford created alot of chances on the counter attack and the match ended 2-1 for Carlingford.
