No point burying our head in the sand over litter

-

THE Monday morning headlines were dominated by news that we could soon have some type of bin inspectors similar to TV licence inspectors going door-to-door checking up on us.

I somehow doubt that the relevant Department or individual county councils are ever likely to go down this particular route, but we must face up to the reality that we are nation of litter bugs.

Bin charges are expensive and I doubt that moving to a pay-by-weight system is going to work out less expensive, as the private refuse companies will not want to have their revenues slashed, as householders slash their bin charges by recycling and composting their waste.

But despite the profile of Tidy Towns and the IBAL Litter League we are too fond of taking shortcuts and being lazy and dumping our litter anywhere and everywhere.

Of course cost is a factor, but let’s be blunt it is not the only factor.

We have to take individual responsibility, we can’t have everything for nothing nor can we bury our heads in the sand, we have a huge litter problem in this country.
